Controls and extinguishes fires. Serves as a hoseman, ladder man, hydrant man, rescue man, and/or as a member of a standby crew during potentially hazardous production, maintenance and storage of hazardous materials. Performs maintenance, operational, housekeeping, emergency and standby duties. Operates alarm room equipment including radio and fire reporting facilities. Performs maintenance and inspection tasks on firefighting apparatus, sprinkler and fire alarm equipment and facilities under the guidance of a Lead Firefighter. Performs fire protection and prevention inspections. Inspecting quarters, office buildings, industrial buildings and warehouses etc. for fire hazards such as overloaded fuses, trash and rubbish accumulation, combustible material storage. Make visual checks and mechanical tests of fire alarm and sprinkler systems to ensure operability. Prepares report of unsafe conditions and conducts follow-up inspections to ensure satisfactory corrections. Serves as a 1st responder with basic first aid training, CPR and AED certification. Assists EMT with patient care at the level of training. Serves as the base primary hazardous material spill and Weapons of Mass Destruction response team as an operations level training responder. Knowledge of basic hazard and risk assessment techniques. Understands the basic hazardous materials terms. Performs basic control, containment and/or confinement operations within the level of training and certification.
As a Firefighter you will be assigned as a Driver Operator when required. Serves as Driver Operator of major motorized firefighting equipment including BLS ambulances, exercising a thorough knowledge of equipment capabilities and installation physical characteristics. Drives firefighting equipment to and from the scene of fire. Positions vehicles so that maximum utilization may be made of its facilities and equipment. Operates component equipment such as two way radio, pumps, valves, ladders, etc. Performs fire protection inspections.
As a Firefighter you will be assigned as a Crew Chief. Serves as firefighter crew chief with responsibility for several major pieces of fire fighting, Emergency Medical Service (EMS), and hazardous materials apparatus and a crew of four to eight persons assigned to a shift. Responds to fires and hazardous material incidents and supervises a response crew in setting up proper fire fighting positions in the placing of apparatus, the adjustment of pressures, proper methods of fire attack and operations, etc. Occasionally serves as Assistant Fire Chief or Fire Chief and assumes on-the-scene responsibility for the entire incident until the arrival of a senior officer. When acting as Assistant Fire Chief or Fire Chief, all incidents will be directed using the Incident Command System. Distributes and balances the workload among firefighters: makes adjustments to day-to-day work in accordance with established priorities. Conducts and/or directs fire prevention inspections of buildings and installations on the depot. Inspects and tests fire extinguishing equipment and systems. Tests fire suppression systems (dry, wet, sprinkler, deluge, rapid action, halon) fire alarm receiving and transmitting systems, evacuation alarm system, etc. Makes fire investigation inspections when required.
The Firefighter must be Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Driver Operator – Pumper, HazMat Awareness and HazMat Operations certified Department of Defense (DoD) or equivalent.
