ASSIGNMENT

ARCA, Romanian Forum for Refugees and Migrants under its UNHCR funded program "Integration of Refugees in Romania - 2012", is looking for a specialist to produce a Teacher’s Guide to improve the quality of teaching and the effectiveness of the Romanian language classes taught by Romanian language teachers to refugees in Romania.

This Teacher’s Guide is designed to provide language teachers with an easy-to-use teaching instrument, including a set of support materials that would assist them in the process of teaching Romanian as a second language to adult refugees in Romania.

CERINTE

DUTIES
The selected applicant will produce a Teaching Guide that should:
• present in brief the characteristics of the refugee population in Romania and its specific needs in terms of language acquisition.
provide information on the factors that may positively or negatively affect the ability of adult refugees to learn Romanian language and culture (cultural and/ or educational background, health or psychological condition, employment etc.) and ways to possibly address them.
• provide helpful tips for specialists involved in teaching culturally diverse adult refugees.
• develop tailored methods for teaching Romanian as a second language, including cultural sensitive information, to adult refugees, by using various techniques and specific interactive activities.
• provide with helpful tips and examples in developing evaluation activities to assess learners’ progress in language acquisition and ensure that teaching is optimally effective for them.
• consult additional training resources (teacher training manuals, teacher’s guides, teaching and learning materials etc.) employed successfully by other tutors in second language instruction to adult refugees.


DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

• Excellent knowledge of Romanian and preferably of English.
• Experience in teaching Romanian or English as a second language to adult learners.
• Excellent written communication skills.
• Individuals with proven experience in adult language teaching in multicultural environments are encouraged to apply.
• Experience in interacting and preferably teaching/training disadvantaged groups or people with language learning challenges.
• Experience with writing quality documents in a clear and concise manner.
• Ability to keep deadlines.
• Pedagogical, teaching or adult training qualification will be considered an asset.
• Capacity for empathy and willingness to learn about refugees and asylum seekers’ issues of concern, creativity and dedication to assists and care.
• Attention to detail, interest in getting familiarized with the Integration legal framework in Romania as part of the contract.
• Willingness to research and consult specific bibliography.

PHASE 1: Applicants are kindly requested to send a complete application file consisting of the following:
• CV in English and Romanian
• Cover letter in English and Romanian
• Short proposal of the teacher’s guide in Romanian.

CONTRACTUAL ARRANGEMENTS

• The selected candidate will work under direct supervision and in consultation with ARCA, who will also assist with relevant resources and specific advice. In order to follow the progress made and to ensure that the teacher’s guide is successfully developed and delivered according to the contractual agreements, the selected applicant will meet with ARCA Integration Assistant on a regular basis.
• It is envisaged that the timeframe for this contract is approximately 2 months (September –October. The date when the selected applicant is expected to start is 20th of August 2012.
• The final document shall be provided in Romanian and it will be piloted upon completion.

ARCA ‘s mission is to defend and promote universal human rights; in particular those of persons granted a form of international protection such as refugees as well as repatriates and other category of migrants.
