Primary care forms the foundation of the Swedish health care system. It involves services that do not require advanced medical equipment and is responsible for guiding the patient to the right level within the health system.
In Norrbotten, Primärvården (primary care) belongs to Division Närsjukvård (community healthcare or local healthcare) which is responsible for the common health care of the population.
The healing work is performed in health centers (hälsocentral) which are primary care units with a responsibility for 6000 - 8000 per unit. Ideally 4-6 family medicine specialist, 10-15 nurses and 10-15 other personals (occupational-therapists, psychologists, etc. ) work together to improve care for people with complex needs. Practices with only one family medicine specialist exist but are rare.
There are 34 health centers in the county. 31 of them are run by the County Council and three are owned by private care providers. The range of activities in health centers varies depending on the municipality, but all health centers offer district care, medical and nursing reception, maternal and child health care as well as occupational therapy and physical therapy.
