A nurse cares, supports and provides basic treatment for patients in hospitals, clinics and nursing homes.
- discuss the desired nursing care for a particular patient with the doctor or other health professionals;
- treating, observing and reporting on patients;
- administering medication;
- ensuring supplies are adequate and equipment is in order;
- alerting doctors to major changes in the condition of patients;
- encouraging patients and their families to follow the doctor¿s advice on diet and exercise;
- educating a patient¿s family on ways to care for the patient at home.
Nurses should genuinely be concerned about the welfare of patients. They should be observant, methodical and clean. Practicality and an open approach to work are important as a nurse will deal with many different types of people, and at a time when they are distressed and vulnerable. Good listening and communication skills will endear the nurse to both patients and doctors. Nurses should have some understanding of the human body, diseases, medicines and treatments. They should be reasonably fit and able to keep calm under any circumstance.
