Dynamic Positioning Operators
A. Summary
The Dynamic Positioning Operator (DPO) is responsible for the safe station keeping of the vessel. He is the primary watch keeper at the Dynamic Positioning (DP) control desk. He operates and monitors the D.P. system when the vessel is in D.P. Mode and monitors logistical operations associated with the vessel. (i.e. movement of supply vessels and helicopters)
B. Duties
a) General
1. To assume the required responsibility to exercise effective control and efficient operation of the vessel¿s station keeping system.
2. To be aware of the latest operating procedures, equipment status, standing orders and any previous incidents.
3. The DPO is also a deck officer and may have duties outside the Bridge area. At these times he must be properly relieved by another qualified relief as determined by the OIM.
4. To be capable of making critical decisions in the absence of the OIM
5. The DPO must assist the OIM and Mate to develop operational and emergency procedures.
6. To be able to control the vessel using manual and joystick controls.
7. The DPO must have a detailed understanding of the DP computer systems, including changing between systems and the various modes of operation.
8. To have a full understanding of the thrust units, power management and supply, equipment redundancy, availability and maintenance requirements. Monitor radar periodically for changing traffic and weather conditions.
9. The DPO must be aware of the vessels operational capabilities and footprints.
10. To have knowledge of the vessels Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and an understanding of the implications of all identified failure modes.
11. The DPO must have knowledge of the emergency procedures and actions required due to the failures of: Input systems, Computer, Commands, Feedback, Generator/power, Thrusters.
12. To have comprehensive knowledge of the vessel¿s communication systems. To keep in contact with the drill floor and engine control room. To participate in the continuous flow of information between the three control points in order that all parties are kept informed of current status.
13. Must keep records and maintain in a state of readiness. See required acoustic beacons.
14. Must keep detailed records on system failure, modifications and required readiness.
b) Other Duties
1. Be knowledgeable of all Company safety policies and procedures that pertain to his area of responsibility. This includes fire fighting, emergency and lifesaving equipment.
2. Maintain area of work in a clean and orderly manner, free of hazards.
3. Participate in safety meetings.
4. Attend on board training meetings.
5. Attend shore-based training schools as directed by the Company.
6. Practice safety, both on and off the job.
7. Complete, as directed, any required paperwork.
8. Must be knowledgeable regarding various functions of other rig departments and shore base operations.
9. Must represent the Company in a professional manner both on and off the job to include confidentiality of Company and Client business.
10. Perform any other duties, which may be directed by his supervisor.
