The ideal candidate is an experienced, independent, deeply technical, hands-on leader and manager with a proven track record of leading highly technical consumer-facing product development efforts, managing G&A functions (e.g. human resources / recruiting, finance, office operations) and effectively operating a technical business.

Candidates must demonstrate experienced leadership of the software development life cycle, from product design through delivery as well as the ability to meet aggressive schedules. Technical expertise in scalable high-performance transactional production systems is key to success, and a deep understanding of relational databases, Linux, object-oriented design (as well as practical experience in C++ and/or Java), distributed systems, content technologies (JSP, Javascript, Perl/Mason, CSS, HTML, XSLT) and state-of-the-art quality assurance processes and techniques is highly desired. Bringing these and strong product judgment skills to bear, this person will lead the creative process and product development efforts, ultimately culminating in the launch of new consumer-facing products/features to the Amazon web sites worldwide.

The successful candidate will also be highly analytical and detail-oriented, demonstrate strong project management skills, communicate effectively, be intellectually curious and remain calm in the face of a fast-moving dynamic environment. Experience making investment tradeoff decisions, designing and implementing effective policies and lightweight processes and setting and meeting standards for operational performance is also required. 10+ years of work experience and a BS in Computer Science or equivalent are required; a MS in Computer Science and/or MBA are preferred.

Working directly with the development center managers, this leader will be responsible for initial office set up and ultimately the daily needs of the office, including making decisions regarding facility needs (e.g. vendor management, procurement of supplies, etc.), assuring newly hired software engineers have a fully functional development environment on day one, and so on.
Juggling many tasks simultaneously will be the daily norm. As such, being well organized, proactive and flexible are absolute requirements. A high level of integrity and discretion in handling confidential information and professionalism in dealing with senior professionals inside and outside the company is essential.
